Menurut Troutman dan Lichtenberg dalam bukunya berjudul: Mathematics: A Good Beginning Strategies for Teaching Children tahun 1991 halaman 242-247 meliputi tujuh kesulitan yang sering dialami siswa dalam belajar penjumlahan dan pengurangan bilangan yaitu:
1. Difficulty identifying addition or substraction situations.
2. Difficulty using counting to find basic addition facts.
3. Difficulty with zero in computations.
4. Difficulty using counting to find differences that are related to addition facts.
5. diffuculty regrouping when computing sums and differences.
6. Difficulty when the two numerals in an exercise have a different number of digits.
7. difficulty when a sum involves several addends or when a sum or difference involves larges numbers.
